专业定义
室内设计是根据建筑物的使用性质、所处环境和相应标准，运用物质技术手段和建筑设计原理，创造功能合理、满足人们物质和精神生活需要的室内环境。这一空间环境既具有使用价值，满足相应的功能要求，同时也反映了历史文脉、建筑风格、环境气氛等精神因素。明确地把“创造满足人们物质和精神生活需要的室内环境”作为室内设计的目的。
Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such enhancement projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, space planning, site inspections, programming, and research, communicating with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and execution of the design. 概念区分
室内设计是理解人的行为以在建筑物内创建功能空间的艺术和科学。
装饰是指对带有装饰元素的空间进行陈设或装饰，有时还提供建议和实际帮助。
简而言之，室内设计师可以装饰，但装饰师不设计。
Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with decorative elements, sometimes complemented by advice and practical assistance. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

室内设计专业的招生，比较看重申请人对空间的具体设计，对软件运用的考核性较强，强调空间设计对周边环境的影响和意义以及在此过程中展现的分析能力，创新能力以及人文精神。

开设学位（及对专业背景要求）
美国室内设计专业通常开设在设计学院，建筑学院或者人文学院等，设置的学位有Master of Arts in Interior Design, Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design, Master of Interior Design, Master of Professional Studies in Special Track (e.g. Lighting Design, Sustainable Interior Environments，Health Care Design).
不同的学位，对于申请人的专业背景有不同要求：
Master of Professional Studies in Special Track学位，针对本科学位是室内设计申请人，时长1年。
Master of Arts 学位，一般是针对本科专业就是室内设计，建筑或者风景园林等专业的学生设置的。时长基本在2年。
Master of Fine Arts 学位，一般是针对本科专业非以上提及的申请人设置。时长基本在3年。（在部分设计学院，Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design提供给室内设计专业背景的人申请，时长2年。注意区分。）
专业分支
室内设计专业开设的分支通常有以下12类：
1. Communication and presentation skills

3. Design technologies (BIM, AI, VR, AR, etc.)
4. Design theory and practice
5. Engineering fundamentals
6. Healthy built environments
7. Interdisciplinary studies (awareness of, and collaboration with multiple disciplines impacting the built environment)

当然，不是所有学校都会有这些专业小方向可供选择。在择校的时候可以去官网做具体了解。

我们先来看一下往年的录取数据
相对来说，申请人的本科专业限制并不严格，各种背景的申请人都可以申请室内设计。但对于录取结果来说，专业院校相对综合院校来说更有录取优势。
Part 3就业分析
就业
室内设计专业的研究生毕业后可从事室内设计师，家具设计师，灯光设计师，设备设施经理，房地产经纪人，展览设计师，产品代表等工作，也有部分开设自己的设计工作室等。
Interior Architecture alumni go on to find creatively satisfying work around the world. Some launch their own practices designing residential and/or commercial interiors, while others join larger established firms or smaller studios. In addition to practicing as interior architects, alumni also go on to make a mark professionally as sustainability specialists, set designers, educators, home furnishings designers and more.
薪资
根据美国劳工部门的数据统计，2020年的平均薪资为每年59170美金。

从以上案例中我们不难看出，美国的室内设计专业对申请人的专业背景不限，并不局限于招本科是室内设计的学生，凡是具有环境设计、艺术设计方面的基础，或者学习过艺术设计的基础课程的学生都可以申请这类专业。学校看中的是实际的专业素质，也就是作品的质量。
